Getting the Most from the Upperclass Years
By Lisa R. Thum, '07 Class Dean
Does your student have questions about course selection, distributive requirements, majors and minors, research opportunities and funding, short- and long-term goals, D-Plans, or general academic issues (dropping a course, withdrawing from the College, dean's certifications, readmissions, and so forth)? Tell him or her to visit the Upperclass Deans Office. The Upperclass Deans provide support to students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years. A dean is assigned to follow each class from sophomore through senior year, acting as a resource for students with academic, personal, or social questions or concerns.
Our goal is help student navigate the many of resources Dartmouth provides. Because the best advising system takes advantage of a network of people with various perspectives from venues across campus, we often call upon colleagues throughout the College to supplement our advice. Please encourage your son or daughter to explore all the resources available.
Our office also provides a peer advising network, the Dean's Office Student Consultants (DOSCs). Eleven seniors are trained to deliver one-on-one peer counseling as well as outreach presentations on academic advising, study skills, and the library.
