Dartmouth Career Services Prepares Students for the Rest of Their Lives

Dartmouth students are a hot commodity in the job market. A recent global compensation survey found that the average starting salary for Dartmouth graduates is $58,000—ranking in the top twenty nationally. Even more striking, ten to twenty years after graduation, Dartmouth alumni earn the highest median salary, $134,000, of Ivy League graduates.

"The Dartmouth environment produces self-motivated, adaptive individuals," Monica Wilson, associate director of employer relations in Dartmouth's Career Services, said in August when the results of PayScale Incorporated's study were released. "Dartmouth provides interdisciplinary learning, the opportunity to participate in faculty research, and experiential education beyond the classroom. Combine that with an abundance of opportunities for foreign study abroad, community service, and leadership training, and the result is a group of students who have broad perspectives and are well prepared for success in leadership roles across all disciplines and professions."

Helping prepare Dartmouth students to find their place in the postgraduate world are the more than a dozen staffers of Dartmouth's Career Services, led by Emanuel "Skip" Sturman. Last year, more than 2,000 unique student visitors made an appointment at Career Services office on Main Street in downtown Hanover.

"Our mission is to support Dartmouth students in making informed decisions regarding undergraduate and postgraduate plans," said Sturman. "But I think it's important for parents to know that we're really a soup-to-nuts operation, starting with the first days that students arrive on campus. We're a place where students can come who don't have the foggiest notion what they want to do for internships, let alone after graduation. We have a wide variety of self-assessment tools available to help them in addition to resume and cover letter advising, career coaching, and our Dartmouth Alumni/ae Career Advisory Network, a database of more than 13,000 Dartmouth alums who give career advice. We're also developing a job shadowing program with both alumni and parents."

The Career Services web site offers a wealth of information for students and parents. And if you'd like to participate in the shadowing program, contact Sturman via e-mail at Emanuel.R.Sturman@Dartmouth.EDU
