Dartmouth Radar
November 2006
College brought Yana Murguia, born in Austria, and Luis Murguia, born in Uruguay, to the United States. Yana studied at the University of California Berkeley; Luis did graduate work at Stanford before signing on with Hewlett-Packard. The couple met shortly before he was transferred to Brazil, where their daughter, Fiona '09, spent most of her early years. Today the family lives in Miami. We spoke with Yana this fall.
The first time Dartmouth came on the radar was when Fiona was in ninth grade. She loved skiing and wanted to go to a boarding school in Colorado. Since finishing high school in Colorado was not an option, Fiona searched for a college with a skiing team: Dartmouth was it.
Up to the end of her junior year Fiona intended to study business as an undergraduate. So we scouted some of the undergraduate business schools—Wharton, MIT, NYU, Georgetown.
That summer she attended Cambridge University in England where she took a finance class and a theater class. After a week or two we could tell by the tone of her voice that she was absolutely in love with theater.
Even though she liked finance, she told us she no longer wanted to study business. At that point her choice was a liberal arts college with a good theater program.
Dartmouth came back on the radar. Early her senior year Fiona visited Hanover. The moment she stepped foot on campus, a cold rainy January day, she fell in love with it.
What do we expect from Dartmouth? Truthfully, it's to continue the broad view, the global view, the openness and tolerance with which we raised our daughter.
We felt that at Dartmouth, in addition to the excellent education, people's hearts were very palpable. The community support is there for our daughter. They've exceeded our expectations.
