Interview with Thomas Amina

Thomas and Pilsun Amina watched their son, Kawakahi K. Amina '09, pursue his many passions for years in Hawai'i, where Thomas's family has lived for more than 150 years (the maternal side of Thomas's family has called the Islands home since the 1700s). Now they are marveling at how Kawakahi, a premed biology major from Honolulu, has made a new home at Dartmouth and taken his passion for photography to new heights, shooting all the photos for the 2008 Dartmouth College Fund calendar.

Have Family, Will Travel

David and Betsy Willis P'08 never imagined they would live overseas. But thanks to David's job with ExxonMobil, the Willises and their children, Ashley and Neil '08, have lived in five different countries. Needless to say, choosing a college from a foreign posting required a lot of research and travel planning. The Willises spent two summer vacations touring college campuses, first for Ashley, a 2006 graduate of Davidson College, and then for Neil '08.

College brought Yana Murguia, born in Austria, and Luis Murguia, born in Uruguay, to the United States. Yana studied at the University of California Berkeley; Luis did graduate work at Stanford before signing on with Hewlett-Packard. The couple met shortly before he was transferred to Brazil, where their daughter, Fiona '09, spent most of her early years. Today the family lives in Miami. We spoke with Yana this fall.

The Sibling Bond Carries On

Growing up in Chicago, John H. Mathias Jr. '69 P '07, '09 hadn't heard much about Dartmouth until his brother Charles (Toby) Mathias '68 began investigating colleges. "Toby was the first in our family to go to college," Mathias recalls. "He did all the prospecting and Dartmouth was his first choice." John made the drive from Chicago to Hanover - "it seemed like a light-year away" - when his parents brought Toby to Dartmouth and he was hooked at first sight. "I'd never seen anything more beautiful." His enthusiasm, in turn, inspired his younger brother Michael '71.

"Enthusiastic Ambassadors"

When Bob and Karen Hoehn of Del Mar, California, tell people that their daughters Jo Hannah '09 and Susanah '10 attend college in New Hampshire, they're always asked, "How are they handling the weather?" "Southern Californians are the most weather-conscious people in the world," says Bob, vice president of Hoehn Motors, which operates seven automobile dealerships in San Diego County. A native Tennessean, Bob knows something about New England winters, having graduated from Bowdoin College in 1974. And even though Karen attended college in her native California and in Israel, she also appreciates the New England college experience. "The girls had teachers and coaches who'd gone to East Coast colleges and each girl would say, 'There's just something different about them. That's why I want to go to college there,'" Karen recounts.
